After launching www.oursisterskeeper.org last October, I find that I am constantly thinking how to reach a broader audience to build awareness of the human rights issues of women and children around the world.
Last month I was in Holland photographing tulips in the world famous, Keukenhof gardens, outside of Amsterdam. The tulips were spectacular. All colors and all shapes imaginable were in bloom. While photographing, I was thinking of the women that I have photographed for Our Sister’s Keeper. I thought that combining images of the tulips and my images of women and children would be a tribute to their strength and beauty. The tulips are beautiful and they are strong as they endure the cold , and the wind, and still stand straight and tall. That is the way with so many women who face abuse and a lack of knowledge of their own rights. They stand tall in the face of adversity.
I looked up the meaning that tulips have carried over the centuries. The tulip stands for Perfect Love. This I wish for all people, but especially for the women and children.
